Opera Appreciation Program

The opera appreciation program prepares participating UL residents and UM students for each of the live HD TV broadcasts by the Metropolitan Opera House. During its 2010-2011 Season these broadcasts will include the twelve following operas: Das Rheingold, Boris Godunov, Don Pasquale, Don Carlo, La Fanciulla del West, Nixon in China, Iphigénie en Tauride, Lucia di Lammermoor, Le Comte Ory, Capriccio, Il Trovatore, and Die Walküre. Participating UL residents and UM students attend the live broadcasts, as well as a series of presentations and discussions of related DVDs (performance, feature and documentary films), guest lectures, and live performance by faculty and students from the Opera Program of the UM School of Music, Theater and Dance. A syllabus (Learning to Love Opera) provides a detailed schedule and summary descriptions of materials. There is no textbook, although the syllabus recommends readings and CDs relevant to each Metropolitan Opera performance. The only pre-requisite is the desire to enjoy opera. Dr. Adelman presents the DVDs and leads the general discussions. These sessions occur primarily on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00p, as well as occasional additional evenings, on dates that do not conflict with the movie discussion series (From Nazi Holocaust to Israeli-Palestinian Conflict). Participating UM students also attend the DVD presentations and general discussions, and also participate in more specific discussions with interested UL residents at mutually convenient dates and times.

This series is co-sponsored as a Fall 2010 Course by the UM Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
